MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has ended his season early due to a collarbone injury he got at the Indonesian Grand Prix this month, his team Ducati confirmed on Thursday.
Marquez had just won his seventh premier class title a week before, at the Japanese Grand Prix. He hurt his collarbone after a crash with Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi on the first lap in Indonesia.
The 32-year-old Spaniard was expected to return for the final two races in Portugal and Valencia. But even though doctors say his injury is healing normally, Ducati said Marquez will need to keep his arm completely still for four weeks before starting rehab, so his season is over.
Marquez said: “Looking at the situation, the best thing is to let my injury heal properly, even if that means I can’t race again this year. We know there will be a tough winter ahead, with lots of hard work to get my muscles back to 100% and ready for 2026. But this doesn’t take away from the great achievement of becoming world champion again this year. We will celebrate that soon.”
Ducati’s test rider Michele Pirro took Marquez’s place at the Australian Grand Prix, but it’s not yet clear if he will race in the last two rounds.
Marquez leads the championship by 166 points over his brother Alex, who is fighting for second place. Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi is third, 97 points behind Alex.
The 2025 season finishes on November 16th in Valencia. Ducati also confirmed Marquez will miss the post-season test in Cheste.
Ducati’s General Manager Luigi Dall’Igna said: “It’s a shame not to have him on track as it’s very important, but we know the priority is for him to recover fully and come back fit for next season.”
