Bernard Galea wins 29th Edition of the Tour of Malta whilst Gemma Mitchell and Derek Barbara win category titles

Visit Malta Tour of Malta 2025

Bernard Galea of The Cyclist by Agones emerged as the overall winner of the 29th Edition of the Visit Malta Tour of Malta, a cycling competition that featured both local and international riders. The final stage, held on the San Pawl Bypass over a 54km course, saw Galea take first place with a time of 1:46:42, bringing his total race time to 4:27:14. This year’s tour was held in memory of Mario Meli, co-founder of the Tour and former President of the Malta Cycling Federation.

Galea had previously placed third in the Time Trial with a time of 21:40, and second in the San Martin Road Race with a time of 2:18:52.
Aidan Buttigieg of Team Polti Visit Malta finished second overall with a cumulative time of 4:27:25, having placed second in the Time Trial, third in the San Martin race, and fourth in the final stage.
Nathan Ernesto Pertica of Team Eurobike secured third place overall with a total time of 4:28:34.
In the final classification for Maltese cyclists, the podium was as follows:

  1. Bernard Galea (The Cyclist by Agones)
  2. Aidan Buttigieg (Team Polti Visit Malta)
  3. Jacob Schembri (Bike It Up Racing)

Women’s Category

Gemma Mitchell of FTP Racing won the women’s overall title, finishing the 45km final stage on the San Pawl Bypass in 1:45:20, and ending the tour with a total time of 4:12:29. After placing third in the Time Trial, she went on to win both subsequent races.
Deborah Schembri of Gozo CC finished second overall in 4:13:16. She won the Time Trial and placed third in the other two stages.
Diana Muscat of Team Greens placed third with a total time of 4:13:34, having finished fourth in the Time Trial and second in the remaining races.
In the Maltese final classification, the top three were:

  1. Deborah Schembri (Gozo CC)
  2. Diana Muscat (Team Greens)
  3. Michelle Vella Wood (Team Greens)

Masters Category

Derek Barbara of Gibraltar won the Masters category with a total time of 3:47:42. He claimed victory in the Time Trial, finished third in San Martin, and placed eleventh in the final stage.
Joaquin Rojas from Colombia, riding for Team Greens, finished second with a time of 3:48:32, having placed second in the Time Trial and fourth in the other two races.
Antoine Sultana (Team Greens) came in third overall with a time of 3:49:02, finishing fourth in the Time Trial and fifth and seventh in the remaining stages.
In the Maltese Masters classification, the top finishers were:

  1. Antoine Sultana (Team Greens)
  2. Mark Zammit (Mosta CC)
  3. David Cushing (Bike It Up Racing)

At the end of the final stage, an awards ceremony was held with the participation of Censu Galea, Mayor of San Pawl il-Baħar, and senior officials from the Malta Cycling Federation: President John Zammit, Treasurer Daniel Borg Olivier, and other officials Charles Sammut and Edward Enriquez. A Merit Award was presented to a large group of volunteers in recognition of their support in organizing this year’s Tour.

The Tour was held under the auspices of the Malta Cycling Federation, with the support of Visit Malta, SportMalta, and the Malta Olympic Committee.
