Bormla Subbuteo Club’s Charles Aquilina delivered a masterclass performance in the Veteran category of the International Open of Flanders this past Saturday, clinching the gold in dominant fashion. Aquilina showcased his skill and experience by edging England’s Bob Varney in a thrilling 3-2 final. Earlier, he had bested Belgium’s Massart in the semifinal, emerging victorious from a field of 44 seasoned players.
The success continued on Sunday as Bormla SC made it a memorable double by sweeping through the Team Event without conceding a single match in Group 1. In a stellar display of teamwork and strategy, Bormla started strong, securing a 2-0 win over Eugies of Belgium, followed by a decisive 4-0 victory over EPL Ireland, which sent them into the quarterfinals. There, they continued their unbeaten streak, defeating Hennuyer C of Belgium 4-0.
In the semifinal, Bormla triumphed 3-0 over Spain’s Tiburones, setting up a final showdown with Caen of France. The Maltese team clinched the title with a composed 2-0 win, sealing the championship and making it a golden weekend for Bormla SC, who claimed both individual and team golds against a competitive field of 23 teams.
