SAN ĠILJAN MAA DAIKIN……….. 19
SIRENS BUILD FITNESS…………….. 12
(4-4), (2-1), (7-5), (6-2)
San Ġiljan MAA Daikin kept up the pressure on Sliema ahead of the clash with Neptunes by securing a hard-fought win over Sirens Build Fitness. The three points were well-deserved, but not before they were made to struggle against an opponent who fought hard for a positive result—and all things considered, the final scoreline might not fully reflect Sirens’ effort.
San Ġiljan started strong with two early goals, but Sirens responded well and even took a 4-3 lead before Dean Bugeja equalized. Kydon Agius then put Sirens ahead again in the second session, but Jake Bonavia replied for San Ġiljan. In the final seconds of the session, a mistake in Sirens’ attack allowed Nikolai Zammit to give San Ġiljan a 6-5 lead.
The same player (Zammit) scored twice in the third session to make it 8-6, and Russell Caruana followed suit to extend San Ġiljan’s lead to 12-8. Giorgos Katsaounis’ team started the final session leading 13-10 and managed the game wisely from there. The team from San Ġiljan never looked like they would lose the match, especially after goals from Caruana and Bonavia. They even had time to widen the margin of victory as Sirens appeared to give up towards the end.
