After three relatively quiet periods, captain Stevie Camilleri came to the fore in the final quarter, inspiring Neptunes Best Gyms to a 17-15 victory over Sliema Nexawin in the traditional derby. The win means Neptunes are the only team to have won all three of their league matches so far. Sliema staged an impressive comeback but were unable to hold onto the lead after finally taking the advantage.
Neptunes made a flying start with two goals from Marco Zuvela and another from Mark Castillo to establish a three-goal cushion. They maintained that advantage throughout the opening session. In the second period, Sliema improved considerably, but Neptunes continued to respond and preserved their three-goal lead at 9-6.
The match turned in the third session as two goals from Jake Cachia and another by Jayden Cutajar levelled the scores at 10-10. Sliema then edged ahead for the first time, ending the quarter with a 12-11 lead.
However, Camilleri proved decisive in the closing session, leading Neptunes’ response whenever Sliema threatened. The veteran captain scored no fewer than five goals in the final period to steer his side to a hard-fought 17-15 victory.
