Spanish side Astralpool Sabadell has added another remarkable achievement to their storied legacy by winning the Water Polo Women’s Super Cup for the fifth time, surpassing their own record. They also set a new benchmark for the most goals scored by a winning team, defeating Italians Plebiscito Padova 19-7 in Sabadell and creating the largest margin in Super Cup final history for both men and women.
In the Women’s Super Cup Final, Astralpool Sabadell (ESP) triumphed over Plebiscito Padova (ITA) with a score of 19-7.
Sabadell demonstrated their dominance right from the start in their home pool, where they have rarely lost on the European stage. The scoring was initiated by their Italian star, Sofia Giustini, and by the end of the first quarter, it was evident that the hosts had exorcised the ghosts of their past Super Cup losses to Italian teams in 2011 and 2019.
New signings Rita Keszthelyi and goalkeeper Laura Aarts made an immediate impact, with Keszthelyi executing her signature perimeter lob during a 6-on-5 play to make it 2-0. Meanwhile, Aarts showcased her skills with a series of impressive saves, helping Sabadell establish a commanding 4-0 lead.
Padova managed to score their first goal early in the second quarter, but the Spaniards were relentless in attack, appearing unstoppable as they consistently found the back of the net. By half-time, Sabadell had built an overwhelming 11-2 advantage.
The team added another six goals in the third quarter, setting a new scoring record for the Women’s Super Cup Finals, with eight minutes still remaining. This surpassed the previous record held by Orizzonte, who defeated Roma 16-8 in 2008. Simone van de Kraats led the scoring for Sabadell with four goals, while Giustini, Irene Gonzalez, and Beatriz Ortiz each contributed three.
With a comfortable 17-5 lead, Sabadell eased off in the fourth quarter, resulting in two goals for each side. However, their 19-7 victory not only broke records but also eclipsed previous Super Cup final performances, including men’s matches. Last year, Recco scored 18, and a 2021 Italian team’s 11-goal margin was the previous largest gap, both of which Sabadell surpassed with this impressive win.
This victory sends a strong message to their Champions League rivals about what to expect in the upcoming season.
