ASA unveils Water Polo referees academy to support long term officiating development

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has announced the launch of the ASA Water Polo Referees Academy, a new initiative aimed at strengthening officiating standards within Maltese water polo and ensuring the long-term sustainability of refereeing in the sport.

The Academy will be led by Mr Mario Dalli and Mr Ivan Sciriha, who will oversee the delivery and coordination of the Fundamental Course in Water Polo Refereeing. The programme forms part of ASA’s broader commitment to attracting new referees to the game, while also providing structured and continuous educational support to the existing pool of officials.

At the heart of the initiative is a Foundation Lecture Programme consisting of ten lectures, designed to provide participants with a solid understanding of the rules, interpretations and core principles of water polo officiating. The course will commence on Saturday, 21 February, with sessions offering clubs the opportunity to nominate one or more individuals to attend and develop their knowledge of the sport from an officiating perspective.

The objectives of the Academy are threefold. Firstly, to ensure that each club has at least one individual with a sound understanding of the rules of the game. Secondly, to enable clubs to have a suitably informed person who can assist, where applicable, in officiating friendly or internal club matches. Thirdly, to identify individuals with the interest and potential to progress into refereeing roles in the long term, having completed an official foundation course.

ASA has encouraged clubs to nominate one suitable representative, preferably an individual who demonstrates commitment, genuine interest and potential for future involvement in refereeing. This approach aims to build a stronger and more knowledgeable base across all clubs, contributing to higher officiating standards at all levels of competition.

All lectures will be held on Saturdays at 2:00 pm, with the schedule running on the following dates: 21 February, 28 February, 4 March, 11 March, 18 March, 28 March, 11 April, 18 April, 25 April and 2 May. Further logistical details, including venue information and any preparatory requirements, will be communicated in due course.

Clubs are requested to confirm the name and contact details of their nominated representative by replying to ASA by 10 January 2026. The Association has expressed its appreciation for the cooperation and support of clubs in helping to develop officiating standards and nurture future referees within Maltese water polo.
