The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has revealed plans to introduce a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in domestic water polo competitions, with discussions already at an advanced stage, president Karl Izzo announced during the launch of the 2026 Summer League.
The launch also marked the renewal of Bank of Valletta’s long-standing partnership with the ASA. Under the expanded agreement, the bank will continue sponsoring the Summer League while extending its support to all junior competitions, including the Under-14, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 leagues.

Speaking at the event, Izzo said the introduction of VAR would represent a significant step forward for Maltese water polo.
“We have started discussions and we are close to reaching an agreement to have the Video Assistant Referee system introduced in Maltese water polo,” Izzo said.
“The VAR technology has become a crucial component, particularly given how fast the game has evolved in recent months.
“We are planning to start using it later this season under the European Aquatics protocol.
“It will not be the full VAR technology, as that costs a lot of money, but we will use the livestreaming system already employed in the Challenger Cup, the Conference Cup and the preliminary rounds of the Champions League.
“I am sure it will be a great addition to our game to ensure fairer outcomes in all matches.”
The ASA also outlined an extensive international programme for Malta’s national teams in the months ahead. Maltese players will compete at the Men’s Under-16 World Championships in Zagreb, the Men’s Under-20 European Championships in Varna, the Women’s Under-18 World Championships in Tenerife and the Women’s Under-20 European Championships in Oeiras, Portugal.
Looking ahead to 2027, Malta is preparing for another packed international schedule that includes the World Cup Division B, the European Championship 2028 qualifiers, the Games of the Small States of Europe in Monaco, the European Youth Championships at Under-16 and Under-18 level, and the Commonwealth Youth Games, which Malta will host.
Izzo also confirmed that Malta will take part in the inaugural international Water Polo 4×4 tournament in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Introduced by World Aquatics, the new format is expected to play an important role in the sport’s future development while providing Maltese athletes with another opportunity to compete internationally.
