Launch of New Water polo referees academy
The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) and the Malta Water polo Referees Association (MWRA) have signed a historic agreement marking a significant milestone in the evolution of refereeing within Maltese aquatic sports. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to raise standards, enhance professionalism, and boost the international presence of local referees.
The signing was attended by ASA President Mr. Karl Izzo, ASA General Secretary Mr. George Farrugia, MWRA President Mr. Mario Dalli, and MWRA Secretary Mr. Peter Balzan.

Under this agreement, MWRA referees will be officially contracted to oversee all national aquatic competitions, including Premier and First Division games, youth and women’s championships, tournaments, and other water polo events across Malta and Gozo.
A cornerstone of the agreement is the endorsement of a reform plan titled “Improving the Level and Engagement of Waterpolo Referees.” At the heart of this plan is the establishment of the Waterpolo Referees Academy—an innovative initiative led by ASA that will focus on the development, training, and certification of referees. The Academy will provide structured education, mentoring, and ongoing professional development for both aspiring and seasoned officials.
The agreement also includes a framework to support the appointment of Maltese referees to international fixtures, allowing them to gain vital experience and represent Malta with distinction on the global stage.
“Our home is water”
ASA President Karl Izzo commented, “Referees are a fundamental pillar of sport. This agreement underscores our mutual commitment to their professional growth and to aligning Malta’s refereeing standards with international benchmarks.”
MWRA President Mario Dalli added, “The Referees Academy, along with this collaboration, lays the groundwork for a stronger, fairer, and more respected officiating system at all levels of competition.”
