Malta’s young weightlifters have made a promising start at the European Youth and U15 Weightlifting Championships, with Nathan Mifsud delivering a standout performance in the U15 -56kg category.
Competing against a field of 16 of Europe’s best young lifters, the Maltese athlete displayed remarkable composure and strength to finish sixth overall, topping his group in the process. Mifsud lifted 84kg in the snatch to place fifth, followed by a 104kg effort in the clean and jerk, which secured him sixth place in that discipline. His combined total of 188kg earned him sixth position overall, a significant milestone for the 15-year-old lifter and Maltese weightlifting.
The result is particularly impressive given the calibre of the competition, with Mifsud finishing ahead of athletes from established weightlifting nations such as Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and Spain. His achievement highlights the progress of Malta’s youth weightlifting programme and underlines the growing potential of local talent on the international stage.
Attention now turns to Kim Camilleri Lagana, who will compete tomorrow at 12:00pm Malta time. With momentum on their side, Team Malta will be hoping to build on Mifsud’s success as the championships continue.
