Malta’s rising triathlon stars, Kai Azzopardi and Ryan Muscat, delivered another impressive international performance at the 2026 World Triathlon Development Regional Cup, held in Gallipoli (Gelibolu), Turkey.
The sprint-distance event, comprising a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run, attracted a strong field of elite athletes from across Europe, providing an ideal platform for some of the continent’s most promising young triathletes to test themselves at international level.
Competing in the Elite Men’s race, both Maltese athletes produced outstanding performances in a highly competitive field where every second proved decisive. Kai Azzopardi secured an outstanding 8th-place finish to claim a coveted top 10 result, while Ryan Muscat crossed the finish line in an excellent 19th place. Their performances are a testament to their dedication, resilience and consistent hard work.
Kai Azzopardi once again demonstrated his growing potential on the international stage, earning 72 valuable World Triathlon ranking points. Following this result, he has climbed to 260th in the European Elite Rankings and 532nd in the World Triathlon Elite Rankings, further cementing his status as Malta’s leading elite triathlete. Azzopardi is currently the only Maltese athlete featured in the World Triathlon Elite Rankings.
Ryan Muscat also impressed with a composed and determined performance. His 19th-place finish reflects the steady progress he continues to make while competing against some of Europe’s strongest emerging elite athletes.
For both athletes, Gallipoli marked another important milestone in their international development. The World Triathlon Development Regional Cup series is specifically designed to provide emerging athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest level while gaining valuable international racing experience and World Triathlon ranking points.
Together, Azzopardi and Muscat continue to establish themselves among Malta’s brightest endurance sport prospects.
