Malta’s national shooting team was in action at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy, competing in both the Skeet and Trap individual events against some of the world’s leading marksmen.
In the Women’s Skeet competition, Mikaela Galea finished with a score of 101 out of 125 targets.
The Men’s Skeet event saw Clive Farrugia and Liam Sciberras both register scores of 113/125, while Andre Cassar completed the qualification rounds with 110/125.
In the Men’s Trap, Gianluca Chetcuti produced Malta’s strongest performance, finishing 30th out of 208 competitors after hitting 119 of 125 targets.
William Chetcuti recorded a score of 115/125, while James Galea Jr finished with 114/125. Christopher Vella, competing for Ranking Points Only (RPO), scored 112/125.
In the international competition, American shooter Vincent Hancock claimed the Skeet gold medal after hitting 124/125 in qualification before winning an 11-shot shoot-off and setting a world record of 36/36 in the final.
Italy’s Erminio Frasca secured the Trap title after scoring 122/125 in qualification, prevailing in an 18-shot shoot-off before producing a world-record 30/30 in the final.
Malta’s Skeet squad was guided by coach Bruno Gubellini, with John Mary Bugeja serving as team official. In the Trap discipline, the national team was led by coach Antonino Barillà, assisted by team official Nicholas Carabott.
The Maltese shooters will now turn their attention to the European Under-23 Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Wroclaw, Poland, from 5 to 11 August 2026.
