The 2025 National Hillclimb Championship reached its halfway stage on Sunday with a fiercely contested fourth round at Mtahleb, in the scenic outskirts of Rabat. Organised by the Island Car Club, the event saw Malta’s top drivers test their mettle on one of the country’s most demanding hillclimb courses.
Matthew Zammit delivered a commanding performance to emerge as the overall winner, cementing his status as one of the leading figures in this year’s championship. He edged out Terence Vella and Christian Azzopardi, who both impressed with strong runs to claim second and third respectively.
Elsewhere, Joseph Calleja led the Four Wheel Drive category with the fastest time, while Noel Galea triumphed among Rear Wheel Drive competitors. Nicholas Micallef topped the Front Wheel Drive standings, showcasing consistency and control on the tight course.
In the classic car division, Roberto Gauci took the honours, dominating his class with a polished drive. Sascha Blanco was the fastest among the street-legal entrants, and Whitney Hili continued her fine form by finishing as the fastest female competitor of the day.
There were also standout performances in the age-specific categories. Jesmond Mangion claimed victory in the veterans’ category for drivers over 60, while Kyle Agius was the fastest in the Under-25 class. Josef Abela led the way in the Guest class.
The championship, now at its halfway mark, moves next to the picturesque island of Gozo for the fifth round. With several categories still wide open, the battle for overall supremacy is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
The National Hillclimb Championship is organised by Island Car Club Malta with the support of Enemed, Transport Malta, England Insurance, MeDirect, and The Point.
