Six Maltese Drag Racing drivers to compete in England in May

Six Maltese Drag Racing Drivers will compete in Santa Pod in England between the seventeenth and nineteenth of May. The drivers are Paul Fenech, Paul Pace, Horatius Caruana, Jurgen Caruana, Clint Fenech and Ruth Muscat. Ruth Muscat will be the first Maltese female driver to compete in the quarter mile abroad.

The Doorslammers event, a renowned fixture in the drag racing calendar, draws enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. Held annually at the Santa Pod Drag Racing Strip in England, it features a variety of classes, each with its own unique set of rules and challenges. The event’s international appeal is evident in its diverse participant pool, which includes drivers from every continent.

Ruth Muscat’s adventure into the world of drag racing started with a Toyota Celica in 2020; since then, she has won several classes. Her journey is a fascinating one, as she was exposed to the sport from a young age, with her father, Charles Galea, also a drag racing driver. Her initial foray into the sport was humble, going down the Hal Far strip in her street-legal car, which she drove every day. But it was this experience that ignited her passion. Muscat soon found another Toyota Celica, this time more ideal because it came with a manual gearbox. This was in February 2020, the time of the Covid 19 pandemic. From there, a new story began, one that is sure to captivate and inspire.

In the beginning, both Ruth and her husband Marius had excellent times, among the best times in the world, with a standard engine and body. Marius’s time was 11.2 seconds, and Ruth’s was 11.3 seconds. Now Ruth’s time has dropped to 10.6 seconds.

It’s not just about Ruth getting herself a race car; it’s about her driving that very car in an international event. This is a monumental step for Ruth, who has been a spectator at Santa Pod races multiple times. The fact that she will now be a participant in such a prestigious international event is not only a testament to her skill and dedication but also a source of pride and inspiration for all.

Ruth’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of her husband, Marius, her father, Charles, brothers Aaron and Kevin, and her mother, Doris, who, among other things, takes care of Ruth’s baby. Their support, along with that of Mark Farrugia, who, apart from being the mechanic and tuner of the Celica, is a great friend of the family, is a true testament to the power of camaraderie in achieving one’s dreams.
