Maltese Karting drivers at the Rok Cup Championship Italy in Franciacorta

Four young Maltese Karting drivers competed in the 1st round of the Rok Cup Championship Italy at Franciacorta Track in the province of Brescia in Italy. The weather was not ideal for the races; however, all Maltese drivers stood for the challenge. The driver were, Jessica Calleja, Morgan Zammit, Benji Borg Irimia, and Benjamin Westwood. Calleja and Westwood competed in the Mini Rok Class, Zammit raced in the Mini Rok and Under 10 Class, and Borg Irimia raced in the Rok Junior.

During the races, Calleja managed to climb to 10th Place out of 54 drivers; however, a contact in the first corner of the final race ended her in 30th Place.

In terms of qualifications, Zammit climbed to 6th out of the 27 drivers in his group and 2nd in the U10. In the first heat, Zammit finished in 11th Place, but due to an 8-seconds penalty, he got 18th Place. In the second heat, he managed to finish 3rd in the Mini Rok and 1st Under 10, and he had the best lap time for most of the race. Zammit climbed from 14th to 5th in the first lap but had to retire after an accident.

Westwood, competing in the Mini Rok Class, climbed to the 11th Place during races and finished the day in the 25th Place.

Borg Irimia had huge engine problems, which prevented him from finishing most of the races. Eventually, he finished 25th overall but, due to penalties, got 47th Place.

The second round of the ROK Cup Championship Italy is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 13th and 14th, at Pista Azzurra in Jesolo, Italy.
