The 2024 Assikura Speed Race final promises to be a thrilling affair with nine horses vying for the sprint title on Sunday, 1 December at the Malta Equidrome
Taking on board the feedback received after the inaugural edition of the Assikura Speed Race last year, the organisers have revised the competition’s format to broaden its appeal. While the race distance has been increased to 1,640 metres, three heats have been held to determine the nine horses, from the Premier and Gold Class categories, that will be contesting Sunday’s final. The starting positions of the nine finalists were determined today following a draw held during a press conference at the Tote.
Andrew Grech, Managing Director of Assikura Insurance Brokers PCC Limited, said the Assikura Speed Race reflects not only the company’s ongoing support for the local horse racing community but also our excellent relationship with the Malta Equidrome.
“Our association with the Maltese horse racing community started over 17 years ago and the introduction of the Assikura Speed Race, in addition to the annual Assikura Championship, further strengthens the excellent relationship we have with the Malta Equidrome, the Malta Racing Club and EquestriMalta,” Grech said.
“The idea to organise a distinct competition was discussed some years back and it’s good to see that those discussions have resulted in the Assikura Speed Race. Our support is intended to complement the sterling work of Malta Equidrome to sustain and grow the interest in this popular sport. We are also pleased to note that the changes to the format of the Assikura Speed Race have been well received by the owners, drivers and horse racing enthusiasts and this augurs well for Sunday’s final.
“In wishing good luck to the nine finalists, we look forward to an exciting and clean race.”
Dr. Matthew Brincat on behalf of Malta Equidrome thanked the sponsor for thier long standing support to horse racing, not only through their financial support for such event but also through their core business helping with insurance covers for the sport. Attracting these long standing relationships to support owners and enthusiast alike remains paramount for Malta Equidrome whilst continuing to undertake all efforts to improve the complex for all users.
Tony Demanuele, vice-chair of the Malta Racing Club wished all owners a positive race whilst thanking the sponsors for supporting this unique championship on the short distance of 1640meters.
