Animal Welfare Malta is investigating an incident during the traditional Santa Marija horse races in Victoria, Gozo, after a horse fell during the event and people watching from the roadside were reportedly injured.
Footage circulating on social media shows horses racing along a tarmac road lined with spectators. One of the horses appears to lose its footing as it approaches the end of the course, with the incident prompting renewed discussion about safety and animal welfare at street-racing events.
Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said confirmed that the case is being followed by Animal Welfare Malta. She said animal welfare remains a priority and that the authorities will continue monitoring the case with the aim of maintaining appropriate standards and helping to prevent similar incidents.
At the time of writing, no detailed official statement had been issued regarding the horse’s condition, the number or condition of the people reportedly injured, or the circumstances that led to the fall. The outcome of the Animal Welfare investigation also remains pending.
The Santa Marija races form part of long-established festivities in Victoria. However, horse racing on asphalt roads has repeatedly generated debate over the suitability of the surface, crowd positioning and the safeguards required for both animals and spectators.
Organisers have previously maintained that welfare measures are applied during the event, including access to shade and water and veterinary oversight. The latest incident is nevertheless expected to place renewed attention on the conditions under which traditional street races are held.
