Byron Camilleri has been entrusted with responsibility for Malta’s sports sector after being appointed Minister for Education and Sports as part of Prime Minister Robert Abela’s newly announced Cabinet.
Camilleri succeeds Clifton Grima in the sports portfolio and will now oversee a sector that has experienced significant growth in recent years, both in terms of infrastructure investment and international sporting success.
The appointment sees Camilleri move away from the Home Affairs portfolio, a ministry he had led since 2020. Having previously served as Government Whip and Mayor of Fgura. Camilleri is also a lawyer by profession.
His appointment comes at an important moment for Maltese sport. Recent years have witnessed increased investment in sporting facilities, greater support for elite athletes, and the successful hosting of several international sporting events. The new minister will now be expected to continue building on these foundations while addressing the future needs of athletes, clubs, federations and sporting organisations across the country.
Among the key areas expected to fall under Camilleri’s remit are the continued development of national sporting infrastructure, strengthening grassroots participation, supporting high-performance athletes and ensuring Malta remains competitive on the international stage.
The sports community will also be looking towards continued collaboration between the Ministry, SportMalta and the various national federations as Malta seeks to expand opportunities for athletes at all levels of competition.
Camilleri was first elected to Parliament in 2017 and has since established himself as one of the Labour Party’s prominent figures. He was re-elected to Parliament following the 2026 General Election and now takes on a new challenge overseeing two of the country’s most important sectors.
His appointment forms part of the Cabinet announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela following the recent general election. Attention will now turn to the direction the new minister intends to take, with stakeholders across Maltese sport eager to understand his vision for the continued growth and development of the sector in the years ahead.
