Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, which has been an important part of Malta’s sporting community for almost 50 years, will be ending its operations.
The Club has played a key role in local sports, organising popular multisport events, participating in competitions both locally and abroad, and supporting the growth of many athletes. Throughout its history, the Club has been a pioneer in open water swimming in Malta and has long organised triathlons, including national championships and qualifying events for international competitions.
However, changes in the sporting world and increasing administrative demands have made it harder to continue operating at the high standards the Club has always set.
President Raymond Grech explained that while good governance is essential, the rising bureaucratic demands on volunteer organisations have stretched the Club’s resources. Additionally, the growing number of local and international sporting events has led to increased competition for participation and support. Over the past 25 years, the Club has averaged 20 events per year, with the logistical and marshaling sections of the organisation playing a vital role.
The Club reflects proudly on its achievements and the sense of community it has helped to build over the years.
“We believe the Club’s contribution to sports development in Malta and its role in bringing people together will leave a lasting legacy,” said Euchar Camilleri, Club Secretary General.
In his final comments, President Grech thanked the national federations, government bodies, sponsors, volunteers, committee members, athletes, and supporters who have been part of the Club’s journey. “We are thankful to everyone who has helped us achieve success over the years, and we hope the positive impact of the Club will continue to be felt in Malta’s sports community,” he added.
