A new Executive Committee has been chosen to lead the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU), which is the main body in charge of rugby union in Malta, for the next three years.
The election was held during the Union’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 16 July 2025.
The new committee includes a good mix of experience and fresh ideas. One of Malta’s first international rugby captains, Gerald Strickland, has been elected as MRFU President.
Here is the new committee:
- President: Gerald Strickland
- Vice-President: Matteo Alessandro
- Secretary General: Mauro Miceli
- Treasurer: Simon Vella
- Public Relations Officer: Damien Davis
The committee is also planning to bring in Robert Bonavia as an additional member.

Speaking after his election, President Gerald Strickland said:
“It’s an honour to take on this voluntary role at such an important time for rugby in Malta. Our goal is to build a sport that welcomes everyone, from young kids trying rugby for the first time to experienced players aiming to improve.”
He added:
“We want to create something lasting that helps the sport grow and benefits future generations, both in Malta and abroad. With teamwork, patience, and dedication, we believe we can overcome any challenges and take Maltese rugby forward.”
The new committee also thanked the previous Executive Committee for all their hard work over the years and said they aim to continue building on the strong foundation already in place, to raise the profile of Maltese rugby locally and internationally.
