The Maltese Olympic Committee hosted a successful Olympic Day in Birżebbuġa, bringing together pupils from three local schools for a morning of sport, teamwork and discovery. Children from Immaculate Conception Ħamrun, St Monica Birkirkara and Senglea Primary took part in a programme of activities staged along the bay, with the day built around the themes of Move, Learn and Discover.
Although the official Olympic Day is marked each year on 23 June to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1894, related activities take place throughout the year. Organised by the Maltese Olympic Academy within the Maltese Olympic Committee, and hosted with the support of the relevant sporting associations and federations affiliated with the MOC, the event aims to encourage people to be active, learn about the values of Olympism, and try out new sports.

Participants rotated around 11 stations, each led by qualified coaches and representatives from the participating federations, giving the children the opportunity to try a broad range of disciplines — many of them for the first time. Alongside a session explaining the Olympic Values, the sports on offer included Badminton, Beach Football, Beach Handball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket, Golf, Rugby, Sailing, Taekwondo and Tug of War.

David Azzopardi, Vice President of the MOC and Director of the Olympic Academy, said:
“Sport is much more than competition — it is a school of life. For young people, it teaches respect, discipline, perseverance and the value of working as a team. Days like this remind us why getting children active matters: it shapes their character, builds confidence and gives them friendships and memories that stay with them long after the final whistle.”
