Malta to host the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games

Malta has officially been chosen to host the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, a proud moment for the country and its sports community. The announcement was made during a special event in Malta attended by important guests, including President of Commonwealth Sport Malta Mr Julian Pace Bonello, President of Commonwealth Sport Dr Donald Rukare, High Commissioner Ms Katherine Ward, and the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Dr Clifton Grima.

This will be the 8th edition of the Games and will take place across Malta and Gozo. Around 1,150 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 74 Commonwealth countries and territories are expected to take part. The Games will include eight sports: Swimming and Para Swimming, Athletics and Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and, for the first time, Sailing and Water Polo.

Mr Julian Pace Bonello said this is a huge opportunity for Malta. “Malta 2027 will celebrate unity, youth, and excellence. But it’s not just about one event, it’s about building something long-term, including better sports participation, stronger athlete development, and international recognition. Our young athletes will get the rare chance to compete at home and inspire others.”

He also thanked all those who helped bring the Games to Malta. “We’re honoured to be trusted with this event. We thank Commonwealth Sport and the Government of Malta for their support. Malta is known for its warm hospitality, and that will be clear throughout the Games.”

Dr Donald Rukare praised Malta’s proposal for putting athletes first. “We’re excited to bring the Youth Games to Malta. Their strong focus on athletes, great facilities, and experience hosting international events make Malta a perfect choice.

“These Games are more than just sport, they change lives. Young athletes who compete go on to be future stars and leaders. We look forward to being in Malta in 2027.”

Dr Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, said the event shows Malta’s growing presence in sport. “Hosting these Games is a great honour and also an investment in our young people, our communities, and our reputation abroad. It will inspire the next generation, show off Maltese talent and hospitality, and create a legacy that goes beyond sport.”

Malta is gaining more success in sport. In past Commonwealth Youth Games, Ryan Bugeja won a silver medal in shooting in 2008, and Kai Azzopardi came fourth in the Men’s Individual Triathlon in 2023.

“Taking part in the Trinbago Games was more than just a race, it was a journey that helped me understand my true strength,” said Azzopardi. “I’m so excited the Games are coming to Malta. It’s a great chance to promote sport here, inspire others, and show what Malta can do.”

Alongside the sports competitions, Malta 2027 will include a Cultural and Education Programme with themes like sustainability, youth empowerment, and Maltese culture. The Games are expected to boost grassroots sports, tourism, the economy, and cultural exchange.

The Commonwealth Youth Games have helped launch the careers of stars like Kirani James, Chad le Clos, Jessica Ennis, and Beth Tweddle. Malta is now part of that tradition, giving its youth the chance to aim high and succeed.

As Mr Pace Bonello said, “To Malta’s youth, these Games are for you. Let’s work together to make Malta 2027 a moment we’ll all be proud of.”
