Swieqi United LEC07 staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat reigning champions Lija Athletics 2-1 in the first final of the Enemed Women’s Futsal League at the De La Salle Pavilion.
Lija Athletics dominated the first half and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Hailey Russell expertly finished off a well-placed ball to give the defending champions a 1-0 advantage. Despite the pressure, Swieqi struggled to break down Lija’s solid defense, and the score remained unchanged as both teams headed into the break.
Swieqi’s Second-Half Surge
The second half saw a rejuvenated Swieqi United side come out with increased intensity and determination. Amy Abdilla delivered a stunning free kick in the 32nd minute, which flew past Rachelle Borg in goal to equalize for Swieqi, bringing the match level at 1-1.
The momentum shifted in Swieqi’s favor, and their persistence paid off when a stroke of misfortune struck Lija. In the 36th minute, Jasmine Vella Turner, under pressure from the Swieqi attack, inadvertently scored an own goal, handing Swieqi the lead and the eventual 2-1 victory.
What’s Next?
With the first final in the books, the two teams will meet again on April 23rd for the second final, where Swieqi United LEC07 could be crowned champions if they win.
