Futsal Malta Association president Mark Borg will step down from his role at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a transformative 15-year chapter in Maltese futsal.
The FMA confirmed that Borg will not be seeking re-election once his current mandate expires, ending four consecutive terms as president after having also been one of the association’s founding members in 2011.
During his tenure, Borg oversaw what is widely regarded as the most significant period of growth in the history of Maltese futsal, helping elevate the sport from a largely peripheral discipline into one enjoying increased professionalism, commercial backing, and growing international recognition.
One of the clearest indicators of this evolution came on the European stage. In 2011, Maltese futsal clubs occupied the lower reaches of UEFA’s rankings. Over the years, however, local champions managed to climb into Europe’s top 12 and reach the prestigious Elite Round, underlining the technical and competitive progress achieved domestically.
Commercially, Borg also played a central role in securing major sponsorship agreements, most notably with Enemed. These partnerships significantly strengthened the financial sustainability of the league and allowed the FMA to remove all registration fees for participating clubs, a move considered crucial in maintaining accessibility and competitiveness within the sport.
Innovation remained a constant feature of Borg’s presidency. Under his leadership, the association introduced the Enemed Futsal Awards Gala Night, creating a formal platform to recognise the achievements of players, coaches, and officials. The launch of the National Women’s Futsal League further expanded the game’s reach, opening new pathways for female participation and development.
Behind the scenes, Borg also prioritised the strengthening of the association’s operational structures. Together with successive committees, he focused on improving match organisation, venue operations, marketing, and the overall professional framework of the FMA in an effort to ensure long-term sustainability.
A major objective throughout Borg’s presidency was the push for dedicated futsal infrastructure in Malta. His continued lobbying efforts eventually gained both political support and backing from the Malta Football Association, culminating in the recent announcement by the Government and the MFA regarding the construction of a dedicated futsal arena, regarded as a landmark development for the future of the sport locally.
Beyond the FMA, Borg also contributed within the wider football administration structure, serving on the MFA Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee as well as on the MFA Executive Board.
Reflecting on his decision, Borg stated that he believes the time is right for a new phase within the association, expressing hope that fresh leadership and ideas can continue building on the foundations established over the past decade and a half.
He also thanked all the colleagues and committees he worked alongside since 2011, together with the Malta Football Association administration, whose collaboration he described as instrumental in helping Maltese futsal reach several historic milestones.
Borg leaves office with Maltese futsal arguably in its strongest ever position, with improved structures, increased visibility, enhanced competitiveness, and the promise of a dedicated national arena set to shape the next era of the sport.
