Mtarfa FC in financial crisis amid unpaid wages and player exodus

Mtarfa FC may have survived the drop on the pitch, but off it, the club is spiralling toward a full-blown financial disaster that could see them relegated from the BOV Challenge League, regardless of their results.

After finishing sixth out of eight in the Challenge League Play-Out table, Mtarfa narrowly avoided relegation, edging past Lija Athletic by just one point. Their 3-2 victory over Fgura United on the final matchday was seen as a lifeline. However, what appeared to be a story of survival has quickly descended into a tale of instability.

Multiple sources have informed MaltaSport that a significant number of Mtarfa players have not been paid for several months. This breach of contract puts the club in a critical position, with many players seeking legal advice through the Malta Football Players’ Association (MFPA). It is understood that the situation is so dire that, allegedly, a number of players have already been released by the club due to its inability to meet wage obligations.

Behind closed doors, the atmosphere remains uncertain. The club has yet to issue a public statement. Sources close to the matter suggest that Mtarfa is on the verge of declaring financial bankruptcy, a move that would trigger automatic relegation under Malta Football Association regulations. If that happens, Lija Athletic, who were one point away from saving themselves from the drop, could find themselves reinstated to the Challenge League for the 2025/26 season.

The MFPA has in recent years ramped up pressure on the MFA to enforce stricter licensing criteria and financial oversight. While most top-tier clubs have adapted, the same cannot be said for several sides in the Challenge League, where player welfare often takes a backseat to survival.

If Mtarfa fails to rectify the situation in the coming weeks, the consequences could be devastating, including demotion, administrative penalties and the end of the club’s brief Challenge League stint. More importantly, it would serve as a warning sign for systemic issues in Maltese lower league football, where ambition often outpaces sustainability.

In the coming days, all eyes will be on the MFA’s Licensing Board and the MFPA. For now, Mtarfa may still be listed as a Challenge League club, but unless urgent action is taken, that designation could soon be stripped away.
