Team Gozo continue to make their mark at the 2025 Island Games in Orkney with strong performances across a range of events in the first day including football, athletics, and triathlon.
In football, the men’s team edged past the Shetland Islands in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 4–3 on penalties after a tightly contested match. The game remained deadlocked during regular time, with both sides displaying tactical discipline and defensive resilience. Gozo held their nerve during the shootout to claim an important victory and advance further in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the women’s football team celebrated a hard-fought 3–2 win over the Isle of Man, showcasing strong teamwork and determination. The squad put on an impressive performance, with decisive attacking play and organised defence contributing to a well-earned result.
In athletics, Michelle Dimech delivered a solid performance in her event, completing the race in a time of 39:23.16, which placed her 9th out of 15 competitors. Her efforts underline Gozo’s growing representation in individual sports disciplines and highlight the athlete’s persistence and dedication.
Gozo’s triathletes also had reason to celebrate, putting in notable efforts in the demanding multi-sport event. Ryan Muscat finished an impressive 4th with a time of 2:03:36, narrowly missing out on a medal. Josef Azzopardi crossed the line in 17th place at 2:16:16, while Frank Attard completed the course in 2:30:58, placing 45th. All three athletes demonstrated stamina and focus over the swim, cycle, and run stages.
