Philippa Busuttil earns 8th place in Balance Beam final at FIG World Challenge Cup

Malta’s Philippa Busuttil delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 FIG World Challenge Cup in Szombathely, qualifying for the Balance Beam final and finishing eighth among a world-class field of competitors. Her result marks a significant achievement for Maltese artistic gymnastics and highlights the nation’s growing presence in international competition.

The event, held over three days, gathered some of the sport’s leading gymnasts, including Olympic, World and European medallists. Competing with composure and consistency, Busuttil showed precision across all apparatus during the qualification rounds. Her standout performance came on the Balance Beam, where she scored 12.650 to secure her place in the final.

In Sunday’s final, Busuttil opened her routine with confidence and control. A slip midway through affected her overall score, and she concluded the event in eighth place with 11.450 points. Despite this, her execution and competitive maturity were seen as an encouraging sign for the 17-year-old as she continues to develop her international career.

The Balance Beam final featured several of the sport’s most accomplished athletes, including Brazil’s Flavia Saraiva, who took gold with a score of 13.800, Spain’s Alba Petisco, who claimed silver with 13.250, and Romania’s Sabrina Voinea, who earned bronze with 13.100.

Busuttil’s qualification and performance demonstrate the continued progress of Maltese gymnastics and the increasing standard of its athletes on the global stage. Her result in Szombathely is expected to inspire further enthusiasm for the sport in Malta and encourage the next generation of gymnasts to pursue international success.
