A Maltese delegation formed part of the HYROX World Championships 2026 in Stockholm, marking another important step for the country in one of the fastest-growing hybrid fitness sports in the world.
The championships brought together thousands of qualified athletes from across the globe, with Malta represented across several categories, including Pro Doubles, Pro Women, Mixed Doubles and Pro Singles.
HYROX has grown rapidly in recent years because of its unique format, which combines running, strength, endurance and functional fitness. Athletes complete a series of 1 km runs, each followed by a demanding workout station, including SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.
Unlike many traditional fitness competitions, HYROX is built around a fixed format, meaning athletes around the world compete under the same structure. That makes qualification for the World Championships a major achievement, especially for a small sporting nation like Malta.
Among those forming part of the Maltese contingent were Giovanni Pappalardo and Avner Vella in Pro Doubles, Amanda Vella Borg and Sanni Toivakka in Pro Women Doubles, Jessica Gatt and Lara Seychell, Dzintra Grech and Mark Magri in Mixed Doubles, Paula Grech in Pro Singles, and Claire Agius Ordway.
Other Maltese athletes who competed in Stockholm included Rosalie Borg Cauchi, Christina Grima, Michelle Vella, Raissa Camilleri, Mearaid Ciantar Brown, Jessica Scicluna, Joanne Lewis, Marlon Briffa, Glen Tanti Cuschieri, Josianne Cilia Mumford, Emanuel Mangion and Jo Lynn Bartolo Bennetti.
Their participation underlines the progress being made by Maltese athletes in HYROX, a discipline that requires more than pure running ability or gym strength. Competitors must combine pacing, power, technique and mental resilience across the full race.
For the Maltese athletes, reaching the World Championships was already a statement. It showed that local competitors are not only taking part in the sport, but also earning their place at the highest international level.
As HYROX continues to expand, Malta’s presence in Stockholm offers another sign that the local fitness racing scene is growing and that more athletes are beginning to challenge themselves beyond national events.
The World Championships gave Malta a place on a global stage, and the athletes who qualified helped continue the country’s progress in a sport that is becoming increasingly competitive worldwide.
