Chicago, Illinois, will host the HYROX World Championships 2025, one of the most anticipated events in the global fitness calendar. The competition will run from June 12 to 15 at the iconic Navy Pier, welcoming athletes from around the world to battle it out in what is considered the ultimate test of hybrid fitness.
Spanning four intense days, the event will feature a range of divisions, with different categories competing separately across the schedule. The highlight of the championships will be the Elite 15 races, where the top 15 men and women from the season will go head-to-head in the sport’s most prestigious race.
Among the many international competitors, Malta will be proudly represented by a determined group of athletes: Dzintra Grech, Katrina Cuschieri, Jean Claude Faenza, Alister Camilleri, Raissa Camilleri, Michelle Vella, Mark Caruana, Marlon Briffa, Giovanni Pappalardo, Mandy Cortis and Kyle Darmanin. Their inclusion in the championship is a testament to the rising popularity and competitive standard of HYROX in Malta.
Ahead of the World Championships, some of Malta’s athletes, including Dzintra Grech and Glenn Tanti Cuschieri, travelled to Riga last week for a final training and competition session. For Grech, the event carried special significance, returning to her native Latvia and delivering an exceptional performance, placing first in her age group and recording the second-best overall time of the event. It was a statement of intent ahead of her participation in Chicago.
HYROX is a global indoor fitness race combining running with functional strength and endurance workouts. The format is as demanding as it is simple: 1km run followed by a workout station, repeated eight times for a total of 8km and eight intense functional challenges. While internationally it is mainly held indoors, in Malta it has taken off outdoors, with more and more local athletes embracing the discipline and participating in events mushrooming across the island.
The participation of a Maltese contingent in the World Championships underlines the country’s growing presence in the international fitness scene. As HYROX continues to gain ground, it is clear that Malta is not just keeping pace; it is stepping onto the global stage.
All eyes will now turn to Chicago, where Malta’s finest will look to leave their mark in one of the most gruelling fitness competitions in the world.
