The peloton criticised the technical and hazardous nature of the city-centre course, pointing to rough roads, tram tracks and street furniture as major risks. Vingegaard was among the most vocal riders, holding discussions with race officials during the stage and pushing for action to protect the general classification contenders.

Following the protest, organisers agreed to neutralise GC times on the final lap of the Milan circuit, meaning overall standings would not be affected by incidents near the finish. Despite the complaints, race officials insisted rider safety remained their priority and defended the route design.

The controversial finale ultimately saw Fredrik Dversnes claim a surprise breakaway victory, while Vingegaard retained the pink jersey heading into the final week of the Giro.
