Paris St Germain lift Super Cup

Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique commended his team for beginning the year on a positive note, highlighting their 1-0 victory over AS Monaco in the French Super Cup on Sunday as a well-earned triumph, courtesy of Ousmane Dembele’s last-minute goal. Dembele clinched the win for the French champions two minutes into injury time after PSG generated 27 chances, with nine on target, yet struggled to find the net. “Today was a very challenging match against opponents with highly skilled players and numerous attacking options,” Luis Enrique stated to PSG TV.

“We experienced periods of dominance and phases of defensive strain, but ultimately, the goal rightfully rewarded a team that perseveres, continuously attacks, tirelessly runs, and unceasingly defends. I believe this is something very positive that we must keep valuing.” PSG secured their record 13th domestic Super Cup victory, having faced Monaco, last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up, following the Parisians’ triumph in both the league and the French Cup.

“The joy of winning a title is immense,” remarked the Spanish coach. “Kicking off 2025 in such a way, with a nearly full stadium brimming with Parisian fans, boosts our confidence and is crucial for morale. We should relish this moment before contemplating the future. “Given our playing strategy and the characteristics of our squad, we must persist in developing as a team and enhance our performance in all scenarios.” The French champions, alongside Serie A’s Juventus, remain the only undefeated teams in Europe’s top five leagues this season, having not suffered a domestic defeat since last May.
