Max Verstappen has put an end to rumours linking him with a move to Mercedes by confirming he will remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Formula One season.
Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the four-time world champion made his intentions clear, saying, “I think it’s time to stop all the rumours. For me, it was always quite clear that I was staying.”
The Dutch driver, currently third in the championship standings with two wins from 13 races, was widely expected to stay with Red Bull, despite whispers of a potential switch to Mercedes during the upcoming engine regulation shake-up in 2026. Formula One’s new engine era begins next season, with Red Bull developing its own power unit following a split from Honda, while Mercedes is expected to be among the top contenders.
Verstappen, 27, has a contract with Red Bull until 2028. Although his deal includes break clauses, none have been triggered. His continued involvement in technical discussions with the team further suggested his commitment. “When you’re not staying, you stop talking about these kinds of things. And I never did,” he added.
The recent dismissal of Christian Horner as Red Bull team principal was also viewed as part of a broader restructuring aimed at retaining Verstappen, considered the sport’s most valuable asset.
“Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it’s always been quite clear,” Verstappen told reporters.
Meanwhile, Mercedes appears set to retain its current lineup. Team boss Toto Wolff has made it clear that George Russell and rising Italian star Kimi Antonelli remain central to their long-term plans.
Russell, whose contract expires at the end of the year, confirmed he expects to stay but won’t rush into signing a new deal. “Toto and I have spoken a lot this week but we haven’t spoken once about the contract because we’re both trying to solve the car’s performance,” said Russell. “There isn’t really a major time pressure now from my side, nor from Mercedes’ side.”
As the grid starts to take shape for the 2026 season, Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull signals stability for the reigning champions heading into a period of major technical transformation.
