Thailand is considering hosting a Formula One Grand Prix on the streets of Bangkok starting in 2028, as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali on Tuesday to discuss the possibility. The Thai government announced that it would commission a feasibility study to assess the viability of bringing the premier motorsport event to the capital city.
Government’s Interest in F1 Expansion
During the meeting, Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized Thailand’s interest in joining the elite list of host nations for Formula One. The potential race is envisioned as a street circuit event in Bangkok, similar to the Singapore Grand Prix, leveraging the city’s vibrant urban setting and iconic landmarks to create a thrilling spectacle.
“Our government is committed to enhancing Thailand’s global presence in sports and tourism,” said Paetongtarn. “Hosting a Formula One race in Bangkok would provide a major boost to our economy, tourism industry, and international reputation.”

Challenges and Considerations
Formula One currently has a packed calendar, with 24 races scheduled around the world, including four in the Asia-Pacific region. The addition of a Bangkok Grand Prix would require careful coordination with existing events, as well as substantial infrastructure development to accommodate F1’s rigorous safety and logistical requirements.
A feasibility study will analyze key aspects such as potential circuit layouts, road modifications, environmental impact, and financial viability. Thailand will also have to navigate regulatory approvals and negotiations with Formula One Management to secure a spot on the calendar.

Southeast Asia’s Growing F1 Presence
If successful, Thailand would join Singapore as the second Southeast Asian country to host a Grand Prix, further solidifying the region’s growing prominence in the motorsport world. The success of night races in Singapore has demonstrated the potential for Formula One to thrive in urban settings, and Bangkok could offer a similar high-energy atmosphere.
Next Steps
With the feasibility study set to commence, Thailand’s ambition to bring Formula One to Bangkok is gaining momentum. Should the study yield positive results, the government will push forward with negotiations and preparations, aiming for an inaugural race in 2028.
As Formula One continues to expand its global footprint, Thailand’s bid could mark an exciting new chapter for the sport in Asia, offering fans a unique street circuit experience in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
