Australian driver Oscar Piastri is confident he can claim the Formula One world championship title with McLaren this year, having tackled last season’s shortcomings.
The 23-year-old, embarking on his third season alongside Britain’s Lando Norris after securing two victories in 2024, shared with reporters at the unveiling of the new MCL39 car that he now feels like a more well-rounded competitor and on par with his teammate. “We are indeed starting afresh, and I genuinely believe I can become world champion this year,” Piastri stated, having played a vital role in the team’s first constructors’ title in 26 years last season. “We’ve delved deeply into how we can be more thoroughly prepared for this season,” he added. “A year ago, I entered the season with certain weaknesses that left me feeling less assured. Throughout last season, I worked on those areas. Now it’s about addressing them consistently every weekend and ensuring that I perform at my best each time, as that will make all the difference.”

Last year, Piastri secured fourth place overall following victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Norris emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite, finishing second overall to Red Bull’s four-time champion, Max Verstappen. The Australian acknowledged he was still developing his skills but pondered if anyone truly reaches perfection and mentioned his dedication to working hard in the simulator.
Regarding his aspirations for the title, he stated, “I think if we can work on some of the things that we’ve set out to do in this off-season then I’ll have a lot of tools to be able to try and make that happen.” He expressed confidence that he and his McLaren teammate could compete intensely yet fairly. Last season, Piastri had to back Norris’s championship efforts after his own chances diminished.

During the European winter break, Piastri enjoyed the summer at home in Australia, spent time watching tennis and cricket, and reconnected with friends on what he described as “probably the longest trip I’ve had back since I left home about 10 years ago.” He reported feeling rejuvenated and eager to commence again, with Melbourne now hosting the season opener on March 16, as Bahrain was rescheduled due to Ramadan.
“I am thrilled to have it return as the first race,” he mentioned. “In hindsight, I’m relieved it wasn’t the debut event in my rookie year, as that would have been quite intense.” No Australian has clinched victory at their home Grand Prix in the history of the championship. Last year, Piastri secured fourth place, while Norris achieved third.
