Jack Doohan's Alpine future in doubt following Miami setback

Jack Doohan’s tenure with Alpine F1 Team faces increasing uncertainty after a challenging performance at the Miami Grand Prix, where he retired following a first-lap collision with Liam Lawson.

This incident marks his second retirement in six races this season, during which he has yet to score a point. The Australian rookie’s struggles have intensified speculation about his position within the team. Alpine’s management is reportedly considering replacing Doohan with reserve driver Franco Colapinto ahead of the upcoming race at Imola. Colapinto, who joined Alpine as a reserve driver in January 2025, previously competed in nine races for Williams in 2024, scoring five points. His performance has caught the attention of Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore, who is known to be an advocate for the Argentine driver.

Team Principal Oliver Oakes addressed the rumours, stating on Friday that Doohan remains the team’s driver alongside Pierre Gasly. However, he acknowledged that the team continuously evaluates its lineup. Doohan, for his part, has expressed his focus on the upcoming European races, emphasising the importance of preparation and performance.

Alpine currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, adding pressure to make strategic decisions that could enhance the team’s competitiveness. The situation underscores the high-stakes environment of Formula 1, where driver performance is closely scrutinised, and team dynamics can shift rapidly.
