Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian driver for Mercedes-Benz, won his fourth Grand Prix out of five races this Formula One season, extending his lead in the standings over George Russell. Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Antonelli had already claimed victories in China, Japan and Miami.

Antonelli started from second place on the grid behind Russell, who unfortunately had to retire after 30 laps due to car problems. Lando Norris of McLaren made an excellent start, moving from third place into the lead during the opening two laps before heading into the pits for a tyre change.
Until Russell’s retirement, the race was marked by several battles between the Mercedes drivers. Once the Briton retired, Antonelli faced little resistance. Shortly afterwards, attention turned to the duel between Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, with Hamilton eventually overtaking the Dutchman to secure second place on the podium. Former Formula 1 champion Verstappen finished third.
Charles Leclerc, in the second Ferrari, finished fourth, followed by Isack Hadjar for Red Bull Racing and Franco Colapinto for Alpine F1 Team. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Carlos Sainz Jr. (Williams Racing) and Oliver Bearman (Haas F1 Team) completed the top ten and all scored points.
The next Grand Prix will take place in Monaco during the first weekend of June.
