Aston Martin has successfully signed Adrian Newey, the esteemed Formula 1 design specialist, who will join the British team as Managing Technical Partner under a long-term contract.
In May, Red Bull announced that Newey would be departing the reigning champions after nearly two decades, making the distinguished designer—who has achieved 25 world championships—available. This led to intense discussions with rival teams such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Williams regarding his next steps. On Tuesday, just prior to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Aston Martin confirmed their success in securing him.
The team highlighted that a private tour of their cutting-edge factory in June was a significant factor in Newey’s decision. He is scheduled to join on March 1, 2025, which will enable him to contribute to the design of the 2026 car, set to be developed under new regulations that include a revamped power unit formula.
At 65, Newey will benefit from a new factory equipped with a modern wind tunnel and in-loop simulator, alongside the responsibility of integrating Honda as the new works power unit supplier.
“I am excited to be joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team,” Newey stated. “I have been deeply inspired by Lawrence’s passion and commitment to his pursuits. He is dedicated to creating a world-class team and is the only majority team owner actively involved in the sport.
“His commitment is reflected in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state-of-the-art but also foster an outstanding work environment. With partners like Honda and Aramco, Aston Martin possesses the critical infrastructure needed to become a championship-winning team, and I look forward to contributing to that success.”
Aston Martin Executive Chairman, Lawrence Stroll, remarked, “This is a significant milestone. Adrian is the best in the field—at the height of his career—and I am immensely proud to welcome him to the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team.
“This is the most important development since Aston Martin returned to the sport and showcases our ambition to establish a Formula One team capable of competing for world titles.
“Once Adrian became available, we knew we had to act quickly. Our initial conversations demonstrated a mutual desire to collaborate on this rare opportunity. Adrian is a true racer and one of the most competitive people I have ever met.
“When he saw what we have built at Silverstone—our remarkable AMR Technology Campus, our talented team, and the latest wind tunnel in the sport—he quickly understood our goals.
“We are serious about our ambitions, and so is he. Adrian shares our enthusiasm and vision, believes in this project, and will help us shape the next chapter in Aston Martin Aramco’s Formula One story.”
