The 2024 Formula 1 season heads to round 20 with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking place this weekend at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. This race marks a significant milestone as it will be the 400th start for Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
At 43, Alonso is in his 21st season and shows no signs of retiring. Earlier this year, he signed a multi-year contract with Aston Martin, ensuring that he will continue racing even as he approaches his 44th birthday. Alonso, who debuted in 2001 and won two championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006, is a veteran in the sport, competing against drivers who were born after he began his career.
The Mexican Grand Prix, officially known as the Mexico City Grand Prix, is held on a 2.7-mile circuit located nearly 7,500 feet above sea level. This high altitude results in thinner air, which affects engine performance and cooling, making it challenging for teams to achieve optimal downforce. Cars can reach speeds over 217 mph, taking advantage of the lower air density.

The circuit features a long straight, a varied middle sector, and the renowned Peraltada corner, which has undergone modifications from its original design. Additionally, the temperature variations during the race can influence tire grip, and Pirelli has selected its softest tire compounds for the weekend. Teams will also test a prototype tire for the upcoming 2025 season during practice.
As the qualifying session and race approach, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the Drivers’ Championship with 354 points, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. In the Constructors’ Championship, McLaren holds the top spot with 544 points, while Red Bull and Ferrari follow closely behind. Verstappen was the victor in last year’s race in Mexico.
With this exciting backdrop, the Mexican Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling event, highlighting Alonso’s historic achievement and the ongoing competition among the top drivers.
