Zinho Vanheusden has announced his retirement from football at just 26

Belgian defender Zinho Vanheusden has announced his retirement from football at just twenty-six, bringing an emotional end to a career that mixed huge promise with relentless physical setbacks.

The centre back, who came through the Standard Liège academy, was brought to Inter in his teenage years after standing out in Belgium’s youth ranks. The Italian club did not hesitate to sign him for their academy and, by around seventeen, he was widely viewed as one of the most promising young defenders in their system.

Vanheusden went on to play one hundred matches for Standard Liège across loan and permanent spells, earn a debut with the Belgian national team, and experience Serie A and European football during stints on loan at Genoa, AZ Alkmaar and KV Mechelen.

However, his story was repeatedly disrupted by serious injuries. The latest blow was a third cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee, the same knee he had damaged eight years earlier while at Inter. After years of operations, injections, medication and constant attempts to return to his best level, the defender admitted that every comeback was more difficult than the last.

In a heartfelt letter, Vanheusden wrote that football had given him a life he had never dared to dream of: from standing with his father on the terraces at Sclessin supporting his boyhood club, to wearing that same shirt, scoring in front of the ultras and even captaining Standard. He also highlighted the honour of representing Belgium and playing in Serie A – achievements that once seemed impossible.

But he also revealed how much he had been suffering in silence. He described playing too often through pain, never knowing how his body would react after training or matches, and constantly fighting to be the player he wanted to be, only to face a new battle each time.

“In my heart I will always want to continue as a footballer,” he admitted, “but my body has been saying stop for a long time.” He explained that the decision was taken out of respect for himself, his health and his responsibility as a father, saying he wants to be able to walk without pain, to play with his son and to enjoy life with his family.

After many injuries and a series of loans, Inter finally let him go in the summer of 2025, bringing a long and unfortunate chapter at San Siro to an end. Vanheusden then signed for Marbella FC in Spain’s Primera Federación, with the Andalusian club presenting him as an experienced defender with strong defensive qualities and ability on the ball.

It was at Marbella, his last club, that he suffered the serious left knee injury, which prompted this latest and final decision to stop playing.

Now, at twenty-six, Vanheusden steps away from professional football with a sense of sadness but also clarity. His career leaves the image of a defender who inspired great hope, fought every setback with determination, and ultimately chose his long-term well-being and his family over continuing a battle his body could no longer sustain.
