A fiery YoHealth Malta Premier semifinal has spilled well beyond the final whistle, with both Floriana FC and Valletta FC releasing strongly worded statements addressing a series of alleged incidents that marred Saturday’s encounter.
Valletta fired the first shot, condemning what they described as deeply offensive comments directed at their supporters by an opposing player immediately after the match, remarks that were, they noted, broadcast on national television for all to see.
The Citizens were careful to distance the player’s club from his individual conduct, but made clear that someone privileged enough to represent the national team should be held to a higher standard. They called on the Malta Football Association to investigate and take appropriate action.
Floriana, however, were not prepared to let that narrative go unchallenged. In their own statement, the Greens insisted that the full picture had not been told. They alleged that their own players had been subjected to abusive and insulting comments during and after the match, including remarks directed at their goalkeeper by an opposing player, as well as racist abuse from sections of the opposing support.

Most seriously, Floriana alleged that one of their own supporters was physically assaulted after the game by an individual with connections to Valletta FC, as well as by a club official. They described the behaviour as having absolutely no place in football and called for it to be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
Both clubs have now called on the MFA to conduct a full and impartial investigation. Floriana were particularly pointed in their closing remarks, warning against selective outrage and one sided narratives that they feel do little to protect the integrity of Maltese football.
The MFA is yet to comment.
