Sliema Wanderers……4
Mosta FC……………….1
Sliema Wanderers topped the Closing Round Top 6 with a comprehensive victory against Mosta.
The first half did not see many chances from either team, with much of the play concentrated in the middle of the pitch.
Sliema had a good chance after six minutes but their attempt was saved, earning them a corner from which no real danger was created. Mosta also won a corner in the 24th minute, but they too failed to create a goal-scoring opportunity from it.
In the 27th minute, the Wanderers opened the scoring after Magri Overend played the ball to Priadun, who found Neil Frendo, and he fired into the net. Eight minutes later, Wescley made it 2-0 when, despite pressure from Mosta’s defenders, he still managed to find the net.
The first half ended 2-0 in favour of Sliema.
In the second half, Mosta came out attacking more from the start. Within the first three minutes, they had a freekick taken by Failla, but it was saved by the goalkeeper and cleared for a corner, which was again taken by Failla. Mosta were unable to create any danger from this corner either.
In the 51st minute, Okereke had his attempt saved, and shortly after, Goncalves also tried to score for Mosta but was unsuccessful.
In the 59th minute, goalkeeper Akpan failed to hold onto the ball under pressure from Nwoko, who was quick to take advantage of the opponent’s error and score, extending Sliema’s lead.
Mosta were unable to recover quickly from this setback, and in the 68th minute, substitute Samba Kone made it 4-0 with a header.
In the 85th minute, Mosta managed to launch a good attack. Despite pressure from Sliema, Prince Chibuzor held possession and passed to Jamie Scerri, who reduced the deficit for Mosta.
Mosta made efforts to launch more attacks and possibly find another goal, but it was too late in the match to turn the result around.
Thus, Sliema Wanderers won 4-1 and took all three points from this match. With this victory, Sliema moved into joint first place with Ħamrun Spartans, both on 28 points.
