Sliema and Valletta players to miss opening matchdays after friendly red cards

Sliema Wanderers’ Wescley Matos Da Silva and Valletta’s Peter Nnaemeka Ohaka will both miss the start of the YoHealth Premier League season after being sent off in the second match of the Gianmari Muscat Mosta Tournament. The incident involved an altercation between the two players, which the Disciplinary Commissioner deemed to constitute violent conduct.

Although both clubs have since played three matches in pre-season, Article 9(iii) of The Players’ and Club Officials’ Disciplinary Code states that “In the case that a player is sent off in a friendly match or tournament and is suspended due to violent conduct according to Regulation 9(ii), then such player shall serve the suspension inflicted in the next national competitive match(es) in which such player is eligible to play.” As a result, each will serve a three-match suspension in their next eligible competitive fixtures.

Sanctions as per the Disciplinary Commissioner’s Report
Wescley Matos Da Silva (Sliema Wanderers) – three-match suspension under Articles 9(iii), 8B(1)(a)(i), and 7(v). Applies to YoHealth Premier League fixtures.

Peter Nnaemeka Ohaka (Valletta) – three-match suspension under Articles 9(iii), 8B(1)(a)(i), and 7(v). Applies to YoHealth Premier League fixtures.

A third player, Babatola Ayobami Julius of Vittoriosa Stars, was also suspended in connection with incidents during friendly matches. His offence was classified under Articles 9(iii), 8B(1)(d), and 7(v). The Commissioner imposed a two-match sanction on the player in the Challenge League.

Valletta have appealed Ohaka’s suspension, while Sliema Wanderers have opted not to contest Matos Da Silva’s ban.

These rulings will see all three players miss the start of their respective league campaigns despite the teams having taken part in later pre-season matches following the tournament incident.
