Mosta and Żabbar St. Patrick handed suspended points deduction and fines after post-match brawl

The Malta Football Association’s Control, Disciplinary and Ethics Board has ruled against both Mosta FC and Żabbar St. Patrick FC following an urgent hearing held on Thursday 3 April 2025, in the wake of the widely publicised post-match altercation that followed their league fixture on 29 March at the Gozo Stadium.

Both clubs were found guilty of multiple disciplinary breaches, including violent conduct by players and officials, and misbehaviour from supporters who were seen throwing objects onto the pitch. The Board handed down identical punishments to the two clubs: a €5,000 fine each, along with a three-point deduction from their league tallies. However, the points deduction has been suspended until the end of the current season, on the condition that neither club is found guilty of similar offences in that time.

The decision relates to a fiery end to the 360 Premier League match, which saw Mosta claim a last-minute 2–1 victory. Tempers flared immediately after the final whistle, leading to a chaotic scene involving players, staff, and supporters from both sides. The MFA launched an immediate investigation, treating the matter with urgency due to the seriousness of the incidents and the negative attention they brought to the domestic game.

In the detailed rulings issued by the Board, the responsibility of both clubs was framed under “vicarious liability”, meaning that the clubs were held accountable for the actions of their representatives — including players, officials, and fans — regardless of whether individual members are charged or sanctioned separately.

Both Mosta and Żabbar accepted the version of events as reported by the prosecution and acknowledged the actions of their club members. The Board took note of the fact that both clubs cooperated fully with the investigation and presented joint mitigation statements, an approach that was described as commendable in the Board’s official reasoning.

Nonetheless, the Board emphasised the gravity of the scenes that unfolded at the Gozo Stadium, stating that such behaviour was “shameful” and “should never be repeated.” The suspended points deduction serves as a stern warning that any further disciplinary issues from either club could lead to immediate consequences in the standings.

The decision remains subject to appeal before the MFA Appeals Board.

This ruling could have implications on the standings as the Premier League heads into its crucial final phase, particularly for Mosta, who are competing in the Top Six and face Marsaxlokk on Friday night. Both clubs will now aim to move forward while ensuring strict adherence to discipline to avoid any further sanctions.
