Marsaxlokk throw-in protest rejected as Floriana are confirmed Malta Premier League champions

The Malta FA’s Protests Board has rejected the formal protest lodged by Marsaxlokk following their Premier League title decider against Floriana FC on 16th May 2026. The 2-1 result in favour of Floriana stands, confirming the Greens as champions for a record-extending 27th time.

The protest centred on Floriana’s 92nd-minute winning goal, which Marsaxlokk argued should never have stood. The club claimed the ball entered the net directly from a throw-in without touching any other player, which is explicitly against the Laws of the Game.

Referee Matthew De Gabriele awarded the goal after judging that Floriana forward Kenan Dervisagic had made contact with the ball before it crossed the line, but Marsaxlokk insisted that video footage clearly showed the ball’s trajectory, spin and velocity were unchanged from the moment it left the thrower’s hands.

Marsaxlokk had demanded a full replay of the match. The Protests Board heard arguments from both clubs before ruling against them.
