Marsaxlokk have reached the YoHealth Malta Premier final after a memorable 2-1 victory over defending champions Ħamrun Spartans after extra time, setting up a title showdown with Floriana on 16th May.
Marsaxlokk broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when a FVS review resulted in a penalty being awarded following a foul by Glen Tonna. Joseph Minala stepped up and converted confidently from the spot to give his side the advantage.
Ħamrun threw everything forward in the second half in search of an equaliser and were rewarded deep into injury time. A cross from Jonny found Ceter, who headed the ball down for Garcia to nod home and force extra time, sending the Ħamrun faithful into a frenzy.
However, Marsaxlokk regrouped quickly and took control in the additional period. In the 95th minute, Dodo was brought down by Polito inside the box, and after another FVS review, the referee pointed to the spot once again. Minala showed nerves of steel to step up for the second time, sending goalkeeper Bonello the wrong way to seal a famous victory.
Marsaxlokk will now face Floriana in the final on Saturday 16th May at 3:30pm at the National Stadium.
