After two wins in a row, and seemingly getting back on track in their title defense, Ħamrun Spartans face winless Gżira United on Matchday 5 of the YoHealth Malta Premier League. The match will kick off at 17:00 at the National Stadium.
While the Spartans may not yet be playing at the same level they showed in Europe a month ago, their recent domestic form has been solid. They’ve recorded two consecutive victories without conceding a goal. The return of Montenegrin midfielder Jovan Cadjenovic in the past two games has been a significant boost for Giacomo Modica’s midfield, and the Italian coach will be hoping to build further momentum, both in the league and ahead of the UEFA Conference League group stage beginning early next month.
On the other hand, Gżira United are still searching for their first win of the season. If they are to mount a challenge for a place in the top six of the Opening Round Phase 2, they need to start collecting points quickly. With tough fixtures coming up against Ħamrun and Sliema, Clive Mizzi’s side must work hard to turn performances into results.
In their most recent outing against Marsaxlokk, Gżira dominated possession but struggled to break through a disciplined defense. Marsaxlokk capitalized on their chances, scoring twice in the first half to seal the win.
The last meeting between Ħamrun and Gżira came in Phase 1 of the Closing Round last season, when the Maroons claimed a 1-0 victory courtesy of a goal by Thaylor Aldama, who has since moved to Valletta.
