Floriana are through to the YoHealth Malta Premier final after beating Valletta 3-1 on penalties in a tense and hard-fought semi final at the National Stadium.
The match itself was an evenly contested affair with very few clear-cut chances from either side. Neither team could find a winner in normal or extra time, and after more than 120 minutes of football, the tie went to a penalty shootout.
Floriana goalkeeper Cioletti was the hero of the shootout, first saving Paiber’s effort and then keeping out Diogo Tavares’s attempt to give his side the upper hand. Valletta keeper Archibald did his bit by saving Owen Spiteri’s kick, but Floriana stayed in front when Mbende’s spot kick struck the bar.
Myles Beerman then sent Archibald the wrong way to put Floriana one kick away from the final, and up stepped Jake Grech to slot home the winning penalty and send the Green and White fans into raptures.
Floriana now wait to find out who they will face in the final on 16th May, with Marsaxlokk and Ħamrun Spartans meeting in the second semi final to decide their opponents.
