Spain booked their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over tournament hosts Switzerland in Bern. The world champions were tested by a determined Swiss side, who held them scoreless in the first half and saw their goalkeeper Livia Peng save a penalty.
Spain missed two opportunities from the spot, Mariona Caldentey dragged an early penalty wide after being fouled by Nadine Riesen, while Alexia Putellas saw her effort saved by Peng in the second half. Despite these setbacks, Spain eventually found the breakthrough through Athenea del Castillo, who scored just over three minutes after coming off the bench.
Claudia Pina doubled the lead in the 71st minute with a stunning curling shot, sealing Spain’s place in their first European semi-final since 1997. They will now face the winner of France versus Germany in the next round.
Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí, who impressed in midfield, praised her team’s composure: “We stayed calm and focused. At this level, you have to fight for 90 minutes. Winning isn’t always easy.”
Switzerland, meanwhile, exit the tournament with pride. Under coach Pia Sundhage, they reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their history and inspired nationwide support. Thousands of fans created a festive atmosphere in Bern ahead of the match, and a sold-out crowd of nearly 30,000 filled Wankdorf Stadium.
Even after the defeat and a late red card for Noelle Maritz, Swiss supporters remained in the stands, applauding their players and celebrating a breakthrough campaign.
While Spain progress, their struggle against the Swiss defence has revealed areas future opponents may look to exploit. Nonetheless, their title challenge continues with momentum.
