Mġarr United Women have travelled to Slovakia as they prepare to begin their first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.
The Maltese champions will face Estonian side Tallinna FC Flora in the first qualifying round semi-final on Wednesday, 22 July, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 CET. The tie forms part of a three-team mini-tournament hosted by Slovak club Spartak Myjava.
Should Mġarr overcome Flora, they will advance to Saturday’s final against hosts Spartak Myjava, who received a bye into the deciding match. The final is scheduled for 25 July at 19:00 CET, with the winner progressing to the champions path of the second qualifying round.
Mġarr secured their European place after winning the Assikura Women’s League for the first time in the club’s history. Their appearance in this season’s competition therefore marks another major milestone for both the club and Maltese women’s football.
The squad departed Malta focused on the challenge ahead and determined to make a positive impression against more experienced European opposition.
The first qualifying round is played through single-leg knockout mini-tournaments, with extra time and penalties used when necessary. Only the five mini-tournament winners will advance to the next stage.
Mġarr are one of three clubs making their UEFA Women’s Champions League debut this season, alongside Hapoel Jerusalem and Wrexham.
Their European journey now begins against Flora, with the possibility of a final against Spartak Myjava and a place in the second qualifying round awaiting the winners.
