Mġarr United make European debut with historic victory

Mġarr United marked their European debut in style after recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Flora in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying stage.

The Maltese champions secured their place in the qualifying final, where they will face hosts Spartak Myjava of Slovakia on Saturday. The Slovak side reached this stage after eliminating Swieqi United in the same competition last season.

The victory capped another memorable milestone for Mġarr, who are competing in Europe for the first time following a remarkable 2025/26 domestic campaign. The club completed a historic treble by winning the Assikura Women’s League, the Assikura Women’s Knockout and the MFA Jubilee Cup.

With their success against Flora, Mġarr became only the third Maltese team to win a match in this competition, following previous achievements by Birkirkara and Swieqi United.

Head coach Ryan Vella relied on the majority of last season’s title-winning squad for the European opener, while new signing Carlyn Presley made her competitive debut, starting on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Presley proved to be the difference-maker, scoring a memorable hat-trick with goals in the 51st, 59th and 90th minutes. Mġarr’s fourth goal came in the 70th minute through an own goal by Tullus, completing a dominant display.

Goalkeeper Giulia D’Antuono started between the posts, while captain Abigail Camilleri led the defence alongside Yanina Mendez, Leanne Cefai and Alejandra Villegas. Rebecca Bajada was unavailable for selection due to injury.

Mġarr will now look to continue their historic European journey when they face Spartak Myjava in the qualifying final, with a place in the next stage of the competition at stake.
